Thanks to the 2008 Presidential election, we’ve grown pretty accustomed to seeing political presence on social networking tools. There’s been a clear shift in communication strategy in regards to reaching out to constituents via Facebook and Twitter – take a look and we’ll bet your state representatives have some type of social media presence.

For the most part, the tools seeing the most traffic with social networking on behalf of politicians have been Facebook, Twitter and blogs. However, LinkedIn has announced that President Obama will hold a town hall meeting via the networking site.

Linked In Town Hall

“President Obama is coming to LinkedIn on Monday, September 26th to discuss job creation and the economy and we want your voice to be heard. Visit our Putting America Back to Work 2011 group to submit a question for the President. You can also read and comment on other questions being submitted by fellow LinkedIn members.” – LinkedIn

Regardless of political affiliation, content, etc., we think this is a pretty phenomenal example of understanding the functionality and purpose of a social networking tool and utilizing it appropriately – the conversation focused on job creation, which is where LinkedIn stands apart from the other social networking powerhouses. Yes, Facebook might have gained more traffic, but LinkedIn is where the career searches are taking place.

Kudos to LinkedIn and President Obama’s social media staff for recognizing this and opening the conversation to LinkedIn users.

Will you send a question to the town hall meeting for President Obama to answer?

UPDATE: Here’s the video from the town hall discussion if you’d like to watch:
